Watch out if you’ve been offered any of the following as quick fixes to write off debt and patch up your adverse credit rating. They all have very serious long-term consequences:

• Bankruptcy – although you could discharge your bankruptcy in 12 months, it will damage your credit rating for at least seven years. Even subprime lenders could refuse loans for people who are discharged bankrupts.
• Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) – in which your creditors agree to accept a proportion of what you owe. Beware expensive arrangement fees. Also, you may not be able to get unsecured loans, mortgages, credit cards or hire purchase finance. You could be signing up to nine years on credit blacklists. An IVA is recorded on your credit files and will stay there for a further six years after the final payment is made.
• Sale and rent bank schemes – don’t be tempted in your hunt for bad credit loans to sell your home then rent it back. You may get only 60-70% of what your home is worth and you could still be evicted after just six months. You could lose your home just because you wanted a fast cash loan.
• Loans and credit cards needing a guarantor – don’t get a relative or friend to guarantee your loan. They could lose their home if they are unable to repay YOUR debts.
• Secured loans – don’t secure a loan just to reduce your monthly repayments. It’s a second mortgage that could last 20 years. You could still lose your home.

If you have big credit card debts, talk to your lenders and don’t be afraid to negotiate with them to suspend or reduce your interest payments.
